Introduction
AMD today introduced a new product called ATI Eyefinity, an advanced multi-monitor technology. Eyefinity enables a single DirectX 11-complaint ATI GPU to support up to six monitors. What does this mean for the end user? Read on and we will tell you. Eyefinity Technology Overview
Eyefinity technology enables one of ATI’s latest DirectX 11-complaint GPUs to drive up to six monitors. The six displays are independently-driven and can be configured in different ways, such as landscape and portrait modes. Eyefinity also supports expanding a user’s desktop onto all six monitors (essentially creating one giant screen) and cloning one monitor onto many. Screen Resolution Basics
The average joe computer user is ignorant when it comes to display resolution. A display is made up of thousands of little dots called pixels; these pixels can change color and create images and text. The higher the resolution, the more pixels on the screen and therefore the more that you can see at one time. A typical display resolution is 1280×800 - that means 1,280 pixels span the top of the screen and 800 up and down; multiply the numbers together to get the screen area. A 1280×800 screen is made up of 1,024,000 pixels. Big number, right? Wrong. A high resolution display like the one I have can have a resolution of 1920×1200 - that is 2,304,000 pixels, or around 125% as many pixels. See the difference in Microsoft Excel - the first image was captured using a standard 1280×800 resolution, and the one on the right 1920×1200.
1280×800 1920×1200
Notice how many more columns and rows are visible using a 1920×1200 resolution versus 1280×800. A higher resolution equates to higher productivity - that is the bottom line. The Multi-Monitor Advantage
Now imagine having multiple high resolution monitors instead of a single one. More monitors translates into even higher productivity. Multiple monitors means much less switching back and forth between applications and scrolling.
ATI Eyefinity takes multiple monitors to another level by enabling the use of six at one time. Besides using six monitors for productive purposes, what else could be done with them? Why, playing games of course!
Higher resolutions provide a finer level of image detail; playing Tom Clancy’s HAWX at an astounding (get ready) 5760×2400 is nothing short of breathtaking. Conclusion
Once a user reaches a certain level of computer proficiency, their monitor’s display resolution is likely to affect their overall productivity. Adding multiple monitors is a great way to increase productivity and entertainment possibilites. With support for up to six monitors simultaneously, ATI’s Eyefinity technology is going to be a worthwhile technology for multitaskers and gamers alike.
THe Game Called HAWX.
